How to Shoot Fireworks
by Greg Thurtle

As a wedding photographer I often get asked to photograph bride and grooms at the end of the night with fireworks in the background, sometimes even from a boat!

Often when I show people the photo's on the back of the camera they wonder how I get such great fireworks images. So this is going to be the topic of this article.

The best way to photograph fireworks is to use a tripod (you can get away with handheld but this is much harder and is a hit/miss affair and requires more practice)

So once you have a tripod put your camera on it, making sure its secure and isn't going to fall over. Also if you're attending a organised display – make sure your tripod isn't going to trip anyone up – sometimes at displays they even let you go at the front if you ask nicely.

Camera Choice

The camera to use is one that lets you have control over the shutter speed. Ideal settings are from 1 second to 30 seconds – anything between this is fine. Your camera should be capable of letting you have control of the shutter speed, you'll need this to be able to get good firework shots. Good shutter speeds for fireworks are from 1 second to 30 seconds – depending on what you want the image to look like. The longer the shutter speed the more firework explosions/movements you'll be able to get into your image.

A compact with manual control or and digital SLR are good for this.

Camera Settings

First thing to do is set your camera to the lowest ISO/sensitivity you can – typically this is ISO100 or ISO200. This means you'll get the best image quality. Don't worry about the fact it's probably dark worry you – fireworks are very bright.

The thing to remember with fireworks is that the sky will be very dark and the brightness of the fireworks last for a fraction of a second. So what you are aiming to do is open the shutter before the firework goes off and for it to close after it's finished. This will give you the big pop of the rocket exploding. This is why setting a long shutter speed is an advantage because you can press the shutter when you hear the rockets being launched and capture the explosion. If you want to get multiple exploding fireworks then set your shutter to be longer – like 30 seconds this gives you a good chance to get multiple fireworks in the shot.

If you have control over aperture on the camera then also set this to f/8 – this should be a nice and sharp aperture for 99% of all lenses. If you're using a compact then using f/5.6 will do fine as you'll get plenty of depth of field with this.

Focusing

One thing with fireworks is that it's dark and you can't normally focus fast enough on fireworks. The best way to shoot fireworks is manual focus, you should focus to infinity (you can do this by focusing on something far away, this will mean the fireworks will also be in focus. Once you've focused then switch to manual focus and don't touch the lens/settings.

So that covers the exposure and focusing.

Composition

So we've got the technical side sorted, next you need to decide where to point your camera. This can be harder than you think. The temptation is to want to get a massive firework exploding central in your frame right smack bang in the middle. This is very very very hard as you'd have to know how big the radius of the explosion is, wind speed, and velocity and trajectory of the rocket to ensure your lens is pointed in the right spot.

For this reason I recommend a wide composition, I typically use a 24-70 type lens set at anything between 24 and 50mm (18 and 35-ish on APS-C based dSLRS). This gives you enough room that you can crop in later to make the firework more central but means you have a much better chance of getting the whole starburst in.

If you like it also means you can get some of the trees or other skyline in to help add context to the shot too.

So that's the basics of How to Shoot Fireworks – hope you enjoyed the article let me know your feedback and thoughts tomorrow.

My new hair cut - Great Deals from Streetdeals.com

I recently got into groupon , streetdeals promotions.
These websites really have quite a number of good deals.. from fashion, beauty, getaways, dining, photography and many more.

I first bought Groupon's voucher for a steamboat buffet in Suntec and since than i can't stop cos i realize that i save alot especially on food.

So i went on to purchase a 90min outdoor photography shoot with my bf which I've schedule it in Oct. Just nice that its a term holiday for my bf so he didn't have to teach.. Plus we are also planing our long awaited Port Dickson trip during this term holiday of his. Can't wait for end of Oct to arrive!!! (^_^v)

Beside food and photography great deals. I recently purchased a deal from Streetdeal.com.sg , for Hair Colour!! Cost $28 for a Loreal hair colour, free cut, wash and blow! But because this price is meant for shoulder length hair and mine was over shoulder length so i just need to top up additional $20.
Not bad for such a deal. Usually when i go for my hair colour, it will cost me like at least $100 ++.

I would definitely look out for more of these good deals!!

And my hair length is back to shoulder length! I really miss my long hair.
Right now, I'm contemplating to rebond my hair or go for extension.. I prefer to have long hair when i take my photoshoot with bf end of Oct!!

Haiz.What should i do??!!

Dressing styles

I think every now and then, every girl will stand in front of her wardrobe and say out loud that she don't have enough tops/dress/bottoms to wear for work/school/party/dates even thought her cardboard is full of clothings.

Well, I'm just one of them! Yup... guess because I always like to buy similar styles of clothing thus making me feel like I don't have enough top to mix and match...

So I've decided to make a slight changes to my wardrobe... add in a few more new additions with the help of online shopping! Yup, Forever 21, Old Navy, American Eagle and many more are some of my favourite brands. And i still do shop in local store.. And now that i've found a shop in Far East Plaza that sells dresses that will fit me. Maybe some of my friends will start to see me wear more dresses.. =)

My plans, which to start?

http://pinterest.com/pin/205436952/
Currently I've many plans on my mind.. but i don't which to start!

  • Planing to start my new job hunting -
I've been in my current company for 6 plus soon to 7th year. Which recently i've been promoted to Senior Staff. I'm kinda of happy with my working environment but recently I feel that my lady boss really show her favoritism till it's too obvious and I can't stand that so much work is been pass to me yet the other colleague don't get to work as hard as me but got promoted much faster than me. Seriously, i feel that i'm not been appreciated here.
I believe the grass is always greener on the other side.

  • Planing my holidays.
Like many others, I'm an avid traveler. I love to travel and enjoy different countries culture, food and shopping! Many will know that I've always like to travel to Hongkong. Yup, i've been there like 5 times already. So this time round, I'm telling myself , I've got to go to other countries. No intention of returning back to Hongkong for at least 2 years.

So right now, my plan will be to visit,
- Malaysia
- Taiwan
- Thailand
-Australia

Hopefully i can visit all these countries before i go back to Hongkong for her food and shopping! =)

  • Planning to start a small online business
Yup, this have been on my mind for quite awhile but it was tucked at the back of my mind because my ex bf used to discourage me so much until he sees the profit in it and tries to encourage me to start my online business.. I was already dishearten.

Now my current BF, he's really encouraging. He knows my dilemma over my job so he strongly encourage me to start my little online business. I've afew ideas... but i'm going to take baby steps to make it work.
I'm glad that I have my bf's support. Now I just need to decide and make a proposal of what i would like to do.

  • Planning to get married
Hahahha.. As I grow older and met the ONE for me... This topic naturally just stick in my mind.
But I know that there's alot of commitment to marriage. And lots of things to do... Like searching for a perfect date to tied the knot. Searching for a outdoor venue that won't burst a hole in our pockets. Searching for my dream grown. Searching for a right outdoor photo shoot for my pre wedding photos. And many other things to take care of.

I think it's kind of fruitless to start to search for all these stuffs w/o a substantiated amount in our bank. So we need to work really hard!

A birthday surprise from me to him.....

Today is my bf's birthday... pity this poor guy as his final semester's exams are within this week and it's makes him no mood to celebrate.

Was kinda of dissapointed to hear that as i thought of giving him a little surprise this evening (yup, he's teaching his evening...)

Well, since i've already applied my leave might as well make full use of it.

Planning

- Make use of my streetdeal voucher to colour my hair @ Mine's Salon (Far East Plaza)
- Do a little window shopping
- Make my way to Taka, shop for BF's present. (Either a sweat shirt or electronic shaver)
- Make my way down to PZ, buy birthday cake and surprise him @730pm!!

Hmm... that's my original plan but i still hope that I can go ahead with my plan..

Did I mention it's our first birthday celebration together.. And chronologically we will be of the same age, just for 2 mths than I'll turn 27 years old in Nov.

17 September 2011

This is it!

Finally my most busiest days are here...

While waiting for overseas delegates in T1

I'm blogging at the Concorde Hotel where me and my colleagues are staying for this official event.
I'm totally beat out by this event..... tons of things to do, so many changes and so many different instructions being pass down. And many things that are unsure of..... Haiz....

Luckily I have a funny room-mate that is staying with me. If not i can just kill myself.!! I even come to a point where i can no longer contain myself  and i tell myself that I'm not going to wait till end of 2012 to resign. I believe that decision will be made soon...

Anyway this is my 2nd hotel stay in SG, previous i had stay in Amara Hotel a weekend break with my girlfriends..

We are lucky to stay in a Club Room in Concorde Hotel...

Here are the photos...

Simply tired....

The busiest period of my work has arrived. In fact since Aug'11, I've been always busy.... but with a major event coming up next week.. just make me feel tired.

I've been staying till very late in office...

Kinda of sick of such life... working till 9pm or at times till 10pm...

I just wish this Sept can pass and let me have my rest!!!

I really can't wait for my Nov'11 beach holiday with my BF!!

It's going to be my early birthday treat for myself!

Talking about birthday treat.... a greedy me have started to think what i want for my birthday.....

Canon G 12

Canon S 95
I've been eyeing on either 1 of these camera for the longest time....... though i still love my DSLR, little blackie much.. She has taken lots of wonderful shots for me but at times i'm kinda of lazy to carry such bulky camera around...

So i would prefer a much slimmer digital camera to replace my old camera, Ixus 80 which is already coming to 3 years old.. Great for bright daylight shot but really sucks at night shots. Anyway it's time to change to a new digital camera.

Missed out the last Commex show in Sept. So maybe I'm going to wait till the next IT show comes up and see if there's any price drop or better feebies.

A Tiffany & Co braclet
I've always wanted to own something from Tiffany & Co... yup, the diamond rings are really pretty but it cost like 5 figures for a 0.5 caret ring and i'm not going to ask  my bf to get me a T&Co ring for wedding. It's too lavish. I rather have a $2K and below diamond ring and not afraid to wear it day and night..

I'm a clumsy girl... to wear T&co ring, everyday i will afraid of scratches!!

I'm eyeing on the bracelet or maybe necklace... depending on what catches my eyes and fall below my budget of $350.

Anyway there's still a long way to go before my birthday.. so there's time to think about it.
Bf's birthday is coming but this month is really a busy month for us. So we got to celebrate it belated...
Not too sure of what to get for him...

Hmmm....

10 September 2011

My long awaited scrapbook loots!

I've been raving that how i wish Amy Tangerine's scrapbook line with American Crafts to reach SG shores...

Yup yup, I managed to get my hands on some of her collections.... at MWL!!! except for the stamp, seems to fly of the shelves each time it's in for restock, so i managed to get mine online!

These goodies are simply too yummy that i can't bear to even use it for my scrapping!!!
I should have purchase 2 of everything! Ahhhhh!!!!

Beauty Loots: Maybelline - Magnum Volum Express Waterproof Mascara

Saw this new Maybelline mascara and read few good reviews like,

  • able to hold curl longer
  • waterproof
  • smudge proof
  • easily remove with eye makeup remover
I've just purchased this yesterday and have yet to try so i can't really say if this mascara is really as what the above mention points is.

And I've also purchase an eye gel. In fact is an eye brightener roll on... Haven really used any eye product and realise that it's by pass time that i start using one especially at my age, 27 years old. I've got to really take good care of my skin. Though at times i really wish i'm blessed with flawless skin. Too bad I'm not.. Haiz.

So got to invest in skincare and lots of good mask!

Suddenly all my creative juices just flow

Seeing that this afternoon is such  lovely... I decided to scrap at my living room... Enjoying the breeze while building my layout up.

Did a total of 2 layouts.. and did some add ons to my mini album project.

Photo taken @ Grand Canyon West Rim
I'm glad to have the chance to travel to the USA. Thought it's my first USA trip but I won't consider my happiest trip.. I'm hoping to have a chance to travel to USA with Bf for our honeymoon.. perhaps New York. (^_^v)  I shall keep my finger cross and work very hard towards it!

Disneyland - Hongkong
Another place that holds my heart... Hongkong. No matter how many times I've been there, I always look forward to visit her. But I'm resisting the temptation cos I still have many other countries that I would love to visit and explore.
Using October Afternoon Mini Album
This is our very first mini album that i've created. Purpose is to journal and preserve all our happy memories. Nothing about that, that i've to complaint. Cos I think I'm really blissful right now.
Another reason for creating this mini album is that i hope to journal all our trips, movies dates, dating trips to garden / beach / park into a yearly thingy and hopefully can be placed at our wedding reception.

A special table where it said, A trip down memory lane..

This table will host our dating time..... all the way till our marriage. =)
Our first date = Movie + Dinner

There's more to add as it's only September 2011..
This month is gonna be a busy month for both Bf and myself...
Really hoping that Sept will pass soon..
